Cyndi Thomson’s “Liar”

Thomson’s voice has been and still is one of my favorites. I have been living for her return to country and “Liar” is another well-placed step back into being an actively recording artist. The song uses a classic trope of country where the narrator reveals in the chorus that her ex is not the liar, she is.

Jelly Roll’s “Liar”

I have a lot of affection for Jelly Roll and his voice. We can always use more songs about ejecting the people who enable our worst impulses from our lives. Country music thrives on carefully chosen specificity and Jelly Roll’s matter of fact attitude about his past means he brings uncommon perspectives and turns of phrase to his lyrics. Unlike Thomson, in this song the narrator is the honest one.

Ashley McBryde’s EP Blackout Betty

McBryde’s rocking harder and harder these days and as a metalhead and hard rock lover it is fucking awesome. My first thoughts are just that the entire thing is a great experience from first to last. Speaking of last, the live version of “Devil I Know” is not quite as bombastic as the album version but the change in energy makes it more compelling whereas the album version feels very driving. The difference between running to keep up and being pushed from behind – I enjoy both but right now I like the live version a bit more.
